      <image:title>Research - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>I am an Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies at the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Boston College. My research explores twentieth- and twenty-first century Latin American literature and culture, with a particular focus on the cultural histories of Cuba, Brazil, and Argentina. I am equally interested in Latin America’s cultural encounters with the Middle East, and what they tell us about the contemporary global order. My first book project, Gastropoetics: Eating as Dissidence in Modern Cuban and Brazilian Literature, examines consumption as a site of critical reflection on biopolitics, cosmopolitanism, and sovereignty. I received my Ph.D. in Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture at the University of Southern California, hold a Master’s degree in English from the University of Warwick, and a B.A. in English and Philosophy from Bogazici University. Before joining Boston College, I was a Harper-Schmidt Fellow and Collegiate Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago. My work has been published, among other places, in Luso-Brazilian Review, Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, Chasqui: Revista de literatura latinoamericana, CR: The New Centennial Review, and Middle Eastern Literatures.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This course examines SF stories, films, graphic novels, and artworks from twentieth- and twenty-first century Central and South America. <image:caption>This course examines how images of food and eating mediate questions of identity in Latin American literature and culture from the late 1920s to the present. Studying a diverse range of materials including essays, stories, manifestos, performances, and visual art, we will reflect on the ways in which such scenes intervene in contemporary discussions of identity, cosmopolitanism, and national sovereignty in Latin America.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Teaching - Poetics of Life</image:title>
<image:caption>This course will explore the representation of lives traditionally considered “other” in Latin America, namely those that belong to female, indigenous, and nonhuman subjects. Taking our cue from theories of biopolitics, which examine the management of bodies by modern structures of power, we will analyze how lives are valued, ordered, and discarded in manifestos, stories, and novels.</image:caption>
